Cancer Prevention

Below you will see several links that will be specific in helping you to do the things necessary in your life to prevent cancer. Deep down, however, most of us know the basics. Don’t smoke, drink in moderation only, exercise, eat a diet as close to a Mediterranean-style as possible, get enough sleep, etc., etc. No brainer, right?

Here’s probably what you don’t know and that will be highlighted and emphasized in our many prevention links. Get into the sun, not out of the sun! Again, in moderation. Fact is, the sun gives you vitamin D, which prevents cancer. And get rid of those sun screens – they actually cause cancer. We know, controversial, but absolutely true. Detoxify and cleanse your body – this means your colon and liver. Drink pure water with lemon in it (helps your liver and your liver detoxifies), take a probiotic (a good one with billions of the “good” bacteria and many different strains) – yogurt isn’t enough because most of the “good” bacteria won’t survive your stomach to make it to points south. Heard of cod liver oil? Take it – and make sure it hasn’t had the A & D vitamins removed. Got fiber? Enough said. Alkalinize your body – meaning eating food that are more alkaline than acid. Cancer hates oxygen – find a supplement (we’ll recommend some in the links) that gets oxygen into your cells (hint, exercise is not enough). Don’t drink water out of your tap if you are on municipal water systems. Chlorine and fluoride are poisons. Drink only filtered, distilled or mineralized (well) water. Get a showerhead with a filter. A hot shower with chlorinated water is deadly because chlorine in steam gets directly into your lungs and bloodstream.

Oxygen and Cancer

The brighter red the color of your blood, the more oxygen it carries. The darker its color, the less oxygen it carries.

Arterial blood is generally a brighter red because it has recently passed through the lungs. Venous blood is generally a darker red because it has passed through the capillaries where the oxygen is transferred from the blood to the tissues.   READ MORE

When the oxygen saturation of blood falls, conditions become ripe for the creation of cancer. Oxygen is removed from the arterial blood as it passes through the capillary system. If arterial blood is deficient in oxygen or if the blood flow is restricted by blocked arteries, then tissues oxygenated by the latter stages of the capillary system may be so deprived of oxygen as to become cancerous. Damage to the arteries also helps cancer spread throughout the body. (See The Terrible Two: Cancer and Circulation).

The oxygen transport system from the lungs to the cells can be interrupted at numerous points, and so there are many opportunities to deny oxygen to cells. Also, there are many ways that cells and their mitochondria can be directly damaged, thereby reducing the cells' ability to utilize the oxygen that is available.

First, it is important to start by emphasizing that cancer occurs when the immune system is functioning suboptimally. I am sure you’ve heard it said time and again that all of us produce cancerous cells on a regular basis, but that healthy immune systems seek out and destroy them. Blueberries Found to Fight Cancer and Infection

Wild Blueberries May Counter Cancer Cells
Anthocyanin pigments shone in a new study from the University of Illinois that tested the effects of blueberries on prostate and liver cancer cells. The results showed that various compounds in wild blueberries—including anthocyanins—possess the power to help prevent cancer in all three phases: initiation, promotion and proliferation.

Cancer is often initiated when a carcinogen causes cellular DNA damage, which will either get repaired or mutate permanently. The promotion phase also involves cellular damage by carcinogens, causing cells to suffer further, sometimes irreversible, damage.

The new study shows that sterol compounds in blueberries inhibit cancer in the first, or initiation stage, while their anthocyanin pigments can halt cancer in the critical promotion and proliferation stages.

As lead researcher Mary Ann Lila, Ph.D. said, "The results were very positive, adding evidence to a growing body of work coming out of our lab investigating Wild Blueberry fractions and their cancer-fighting properties at all stages: initiation, promotion and proliferation. What's in your milk?

Exposure to sunlight may decrease risk of advanced breast cancer

A research team from the Northern California Cancer Center, the University of Southern California, and Wake Forest University School of Medicine has found that increased exposure to sunlight - which increases levels of vitamin D in the body - may decrease the risk of advanced breast cancer.   READ MORE

In a study reported online this week in the American Journal of Epidemiology , the researchers found that women with high sun exposure had half the risk of developing advanced breast cancer, which is cancer that has spread beyond the breast, compared to women with low sun exposure. These findings were observed only for women with naturally light skin color. The study defined high sun exposure as having dark skin on the forehead, an area that is usually exposed to sunlight.

The scientists used a portable reflectometer to measure skin color on the underarm, an area that is usually not directly exposed to sunlight. Based on these measurements, they classified the women as having light, medium or dark natural skin color. Researchers then compared sun exposure between women with breast cancer and those without breast cancer. Sun exposure was measured as the difference in skin color between the underarm and the forehead.

Black Raspberries Can Help Prevent Cancer

Researchers at the Ohio State Comprehensive Cancer Center have revealed that a component of black raspberries can effectively help in cancer prevention.

They found that anthocyanins, a class of flavonoids in black raspberries, inhibited growth and stimulated apoptosis in the esophagus of rats treated with an esophageal carcinogen.   READ MORE

"Our data provide strong evidence that anthocyanins are important for cancer prevention," said the study''s lead author, Gary D. Stoner, Ph.D., a professor in the department of internal medicine at Ohio State University.

During the study, the team led by Stoner fed rats an anthocyanin-rich extract of black raspberries and found that the extract was nearly as effective in preventing esophageal cancer in rats as whole black raspberries.

The researchers conducted clinical trials using whole berry powder, which has yielded some promising results, but required patients to take up to 60 grams of powder a day.

"Now that we know the anthocyanins in berries are almost as active as whole berries themselves, we hope to be able to prevent cancer in humans using a standardized mixture of anthocyanins," said Stoner.

However, be aware that the Agriculture Department studied 71 types of broccoli plants and found a 30-fold difference in the amounts of glucoraphanin. It appears that the more bitter the broccoli is, the more glucoraphanin it has. Broccoli sprouts have been developed under the trade name BroccoSprouts that have a consistent level of sulforaphane - as much as 20 times higher than the levels found in mature heads of broccoli.

The American Cancer Society (ACS), the world’s wealthiest "non-profit institution", is fixated on damage control - - screening, diagnosis and treatment, - - and genetic research, with indifference or even hostility to cancer prevention. Together with the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the ACS has failed to provide Congress, regulatory agencies and the public with the strong body of scientific evidence clearly relating the escalating incidence of non-smoking related cancers to involuntary and avoidable exposures to industrial carcinogens in air, water, the workplace, and consumer products - - food, cosmetics and toiletries - - so that appropriate corrective and legislative regulatory and action has not been taken. Nor have citizens been provided with available information to protect themselves against avoidable cancer risks. As such, the ACS bears a heavy responsibility for the current cancer epidemic, with lifetime risks now approaching one in two for men and one in three for women . These concerns are further compounded by incestuous conflicts of interest, apart from serious financial irregularities.

Prostate cancer showing vitamin "risks" may not be accurate

If I had to pick a catchphrase for Dr. Wright, I'd have to go with "Copy Nature." It's something he says -- and writes -- over and over again. And for good reason. One of the best recent examples of this occurred last October, when news broke about the supposed prostate cancer "risks" associated with selenium and vitamin E. In fact, the National Cancer Institute actually halted a study on these two nutrients after researchers claimed that they increased prostate cancer and diabetes risk.

It was a rather odd finding, considering the fact that the study was launched because previous research showed that vitamin E and selenium resulted in 32 percent and 60 percent lower rates of prostate cancer, respectively. But rather than determining what factors may have accounted for this dramatic difference, the NCI simply halted the study and pronounced these two valuable nutrients as potentially dangerous.
